South African (1926 - 2009) He was best known for his woodcuts. Though he began as a painter, he was drawn to woodcutting and made his mark in that medium, later creating the woodcuts as the work itself by painting directly on the carved panel, rather than merely using them to create prints.

This is part of a continuing series of paintings in my sketchbook. It was meant to be a daily painting project throughout the month of October, but since I got sidetracked on another project, I'll keep on anyway.
I used to illustrate for Bride's magazine back in the days when I lived in New York and when I had occasion to visit the office of the Editor-In-Chief, I was covetous of her collection of vintage tin litho typewriters. Here are a few cool ones, mostly from the 1950s.
